Andrea Apodaca
Caregiver / Research Assistant
With a natural love of animals as long as she can remember, it was at the age of four that Andrea decided to one day work with animals. Starting out with volunteering at a wildlife care center in her teens, she continued to increase her knowledge of animals by studying Animal Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The extremely hands-on learning experience enabled her to take part in the care of multiple domesticated species, but also in research as well. It wasn’t until her fourth year that she actually got to intern at a local zoo, thus getting closer to her goal of working with exotic animals.
All the while Andrea was working at a local non-profit humane society, caring and trying to find homes for dogs and cats. It was here that she realized promoting the well-being of animals was more than just a childish whim, but her true calling in life. After completing her degree Andrea continued to pursue her goal of working with exotic animals. Months of discouragement passed until finally there was a light at the end of the tunnel.
The opportunity to work at the Gorilla Foundation presented itself and she felt like her goal that started so long ago was finally coming to fruition. The chance to work, help, and support not just any exotic animal, but the most unique and inspiring creature, Koko as well as her companion Ndume, is beyond any expectation she could have possibly imagined. Andrea looks forward to her future with the Gorilla Foundation, and will from now on promote the idea that dreams do come true.
