Animal Welfare Groups Plan Kitten/Gorilla Introduction
August 2, 2000 (San Mateo) -- The Gorilla Foundation in Woodside, California, will be enlisting the help of another local non-profit, the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) of San Mateo, California, today for a special assignment: to cheer up one of their residents, 29-year old Koko the gorilla.
Koko, a nationally known gorilla with a 1,000-plus word sign language vocabulary, has been grieving the passing of one of her long-time gorilla companions, Michael, who had lived with her at the Gorilla Foundation since 1976.
Why a kitten? Over the years, Koko has enjoyed spending time with kittens. Her relationship with one kitten, All Ball, was highly publicized, including an unforgettable photo on the cover of National Geographic.
The organizations have arranged for a kitten to spend time with Koko. The introduction will be closed to everyone besides Koko, the kitten and a few Gorilla Foundation staff. Following this visit, and once the kitten has completed his foster period and a second health check and evaluation, PHS will place him for adoption. They may have a lottery system to determine the adopter, as this kitten will likely receive much attention. PHS and the Gorilla Foundation share similar missions. The Gorilla Foundation's goal is to save apes, while PHS saves companion animals and local wildlife.
