San Francisco Public Library Goes Ape

San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Main Library at 100 Larkin Street will present three events next month in conjunction with several current exhibits: "The Gathering" in the Skylight Gallery through October 6, 2000 and "Poachers to Protectors: Koko's Kitten Book Project," in the Jewett Gallery through October 20, 2000.

On Wednesday, October 4 at 6:00pm, wildlife conservationist Anthony L. Rose, Ph.D. will give his perspective on the controversial bushmeat issue during a presentation, "On the Road with a Gorilla Hunter: Turning Poachers to Protectors." Rose has done extensive research on the profound effects of human-primate interaction over most of the world where apes and monkeys live. He devotes most of his time and energy to influencing the human dimensions of wildlife and wilderness conservation, serves as director of the Biosynergy Institute in Hermosa Beach, and teaches psychology and anthropology at Antioch University in Los Angeles. The lecture will take place in the Latino Hispanic Community Meeting Room on the lower level of the Main Library.

"On Friday, October 6 at 2:00pm, sculptor and biologist Bart Walter will present a slide lecture, "Reflections on 'The Gathering'," in the Koret Auditorium. Walter's art exhibit of seven life-size bronze chimpanzee sculptures (on display in the 6th floor Skylight Gallery), celebrates the Jane Goodall Institute's 40th Anniversary and the recent release of Dr. Jane Goodall's book, Jane Goodall - 40 Years at Gombe: A Tribute to Four Decades of Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation. Known for capturing the spirit and personality of chimpanzees, The Gathering depicts the social nature and dynamic grouping of chimpanzees. It also explores the unique relationships between art and science, as well as wildlife and the environment. The Gathering was initially sculpted for a children's learning center in Iowa and has appeared in a variety of venues around the world. The slide lecture coincides with the closing day of Walter's sculpture exhibit at the Main Library.

On Wednesday, October 11 at 6:00pm, comparative psychologist Marilyn Matevia will present an overview of the history and evolution of ape images in the media during her talk. "Gorilla My Dreams: Evolving Images of The Great Apes in Film & Fiction." The event will be held in the Koret Auditorium on the lower level of the Main Library.
