Videographer: Ron Cohn

Usage: Koko uses APPLE when referring to the fruit, pictures of apples, etc. She gets a slice of apple daily as a treat for doing health check-ups.

ASL Description: The right “A” hand thumb tip touches the cheek, with palm facing out, and twists forward twice.

GSL Description: Koko touches her whole fist to her cheek, rather than just the thumb.

In the video, Dr. Penny Patterson explains how Koko does the sign, after her assistant Darlene demonstrates the conventional ASL version.

(GSL = Gorilla Sign Language, an occasionally slightly modified version of ASL.)
