The
Gorilla Foundation is developing a multimedia database,
called ZEST, that contains all of Koko's sign language
vocabulary (ASL) and makes it easy for others to learn
it too. This includes gorillas and other great apes currently
in captive settings, as well as their caregivers (to improve
our ability to care for them and to enrich their lives
in captivity), and extends to the general public, through
schools and the internet, in an effort to facilitate and
foster interspecies communication. ZEST will also be a
tool for collaborative interspecies communication research,
training and conservation. The following preview illustrates
some of the features of ZEST that are planned for release
soon.
