The
Signs section of the database contains a Dictionary of
over 1,000 of Koko's signs, each with a short video clip
of Dr. Penny Patterson and a gorilla caregiver demonstrating
the sign in strict ASL (American Sign Language) as well
as the difference (if any) in the way Koko does the sign
(GSL). There are also text descriptions (ASL/GSL), and
in some cases a photo of Koko demonstrating the sign.
Notice that on the right (see screenshot below) there
are links to Koko Video Examples, Great Apes who share
the sign, and Sign Subsets (logical groups of signs, eg.
Daily Essential Signs) to which the sign belongs. Click

Since
video is usually the fastest way (for humans) to learn
a sign, we added a "ZOOM" view so that you can
focus on the Penny (and Darlene) video clips. The following
screenshot shows the result of searchin for the sign for
DRINK and then clicking the ZOOM button. Note that at
the top of the screen there are search fields to help
you quickly find a sign (or phrase) by: letter, menu,
subset, type, multmiedia content or string.
