The
Signs section also records the sign Vocabulary for each
of the great apes (including humans) sharing the database.
Each great ape can "target" any sign(s) in the
dictionary, and ADD it to his/her vocabulary by searching
and clicking (Screenshot 3a). Once in the ape's vocabulary,
clicking on the sign will bring up the Koko/Penny multimedia
description from the Dictionary, and optionally show a
customized personal photo, video or text description for
that particular ape.

To
help recognize who can communicate with whom, there is
a Compare function, which let's the user look at two great
apes at a time, and see which signs are Shared or UnShared.
The Shared signs indicate the kind of conversation the
two apes can carry on now; the Un-Shared signs indicate
which signs each should learn to improve their communication
( Screenshot 3b).
