The
Tutorial part of the ZEST Database includes documentation
on how to teach sign language to great apes (or small
children), and a step-by-step guide for how to use the
database to expedite learning — leveraging Koko
for motivation. The following screenshot shows the different
sections of the Tutorial:

Within
the Tutorial section are links to various Video Examples
and Signs that help make the lessons more clear. For example,
the following screenshot features a video clip of Penny
teaching baby Koko to sign Eat, Drink and More, using
two of the techniques discussed in the Tutorial —
modelling and molding.

The
ZEST Tutorial will be incrementally improved with feedback
and help from the user community. Version 2.0 of ZEST
(Version 1 was in the form of a simple Powerpoint Presentation
demonstrating the signs) should be available for early
release to selected sites by the end of 2006.
We thank FileMaker
Inc. for providing the latest generation of their
FileMaker Pro database software to facilitate the entire
development process. |
