Dear Friend,

In the above video, watch Koko (age 37, in 2008) flip through a book and pause at a photo of Knut the polar bear, who is being observed at the Berlin Zoo by a crowd of people with cameras.

Koko studies the image, then points at Knut and signs “Gorilla Koko-love.”

I suddenly realize that Koko might relate to Knut’s experience, recalling her time at the San Francisco Zoo, where she was often watched by visitors.  This moment reminds us of Koko’s deep awareness and sensitivity, and serves as a reminder of the importance of treating all animals with dignity and respect.

Not all animals in captivity want to be on display — especially gorillas!

Thanks for watching!
