Male gorillas like Ndume (Koko’s companion) begin to develop a silver coat of hair on their backs as they become young teenagers (and fully grown). It thus becomes easy to pick them out as the “leader” of their family (typically multiple females and their offspring).
Ndume is currently 23, and has many leadership qualities that probably appealed to Koko when she selected him (via video dating) to be her potential mate.
